Providing a Safe Environment for Children Infected with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus

Cheryl L. Beverly

University of Florida

The number of school-age persons who are infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) continues to increase. HIV is infectious to others and increases the susceptibility of the person with HIV to infection from other viral and bacterial diseases. This article addresses health care of children with HIV and infection control precautions and presents recommendations for personnel preparation and policy development necessary to create a safe educational environment for all children and personnel, including those with HIV.
